The brothers of singing star Susan Boyle have fallen out over her future career. John and Gerry Boyle are said to be “squabbling” over what to do for their younger sister after a blunt admission that she needs round-the-clock care. The row is over her manager Andy Stephens, 59, who has been at Susan’s side since she catapulted to fame on TV show Britain’s Got Talent in May 2009.

He accompanies Susan, 48, as she tours the world to promote her best-selling album, I Dreamed a Dream, and comforted her when she fainted at ­Heathrow airport last month.

Gerry, 55, approves of Andy but older brother John, 59, has blamed him for “not looking after Susan ­properly”.

Friends say the brothers have tried to keep their opposing views from Susan for fear of upsetting her as she struggles with her new-found fame. An insider said: “Both John and Gerry want only the best for Susan but there is conflict there. They have ­differing opinions on how they want Susan to be treated and managed.”

John insists his sister is in a ­fragile emotional state and ill-equipped to cope with the roller-coaster ride of life in the spotlight. He told an American magazine that Susan had a “disability”. He said: “It’s only manageable by having great patience with Susan. It’s difficult to diagnose.

“One night she’s OK. The next night she blows up. It’s a difficult ­situation, multiplied by fame. If Susan sat beside you, you would know she had a wee problem. She has always had those problems.” John also told the magazine he blamed her management for “not ­looking after her properly”.

The stinging comments caused anger and dismay at Susan’s record label, Sony. An insider said: “The ­comments did not go down well. It makes Susan out to be unstable and that is not the image they want to portray. Susan has a very capable management team backing her and they put her best interests first.

However Gerry insists: “We all grew up there but she has to know she can’t now. She’s telling everyone she will stay but she has to be made to move. She needs protection. She has to realise she is in the world of celebrity and she is too exposed in that house. It’s going to be a wrench but she has to move or who knows what will happen.”

He further said : “She needs some protection and we are very angry that this has been allowed to happen to her. She is distressed.”

A friend of hers added: “Simon’s always offered her 24/7 security but her management haven’t taken up the offer. Normally it’s not the label’s responsibility but because of how famous she got so quickly Simon is very caring about Susan.”

A Syco spokesman said: “Susan’s safety and welfare is of paramount importance to all of us.” Her brother Gerry added: “The people we are angry with are her management. These people were very quick to work with Susan but they have not done enough to protect her. You wouldn’t see Shirley Bassey living in a house that anyone could walk up to. Celebrities have gates, security men, ten foot high metal fences and that’s what Susan has to realise. She can’t stay there any more.”

The scare came after two trespassers were spotted snooping in her garden over the Christmas period. Boyle’s security was increased on the orders of mentor Simon Cowell, but she reportedly rebuffed all urges for her to move away from her hometown so she could live in a safer area. However, Boyle has backed down to her label’s pleas – agreeing to live in London for most of the time, while still keeping her three-bed house, according to Britain’s The Sun newspaper. And her lavish new apartment will be a second home for her beloved cat Pebbles.

A source says, “She has now agreed to move to a place in the city, where she’ll stay when busy working. During promotion commitments, it is thought she will stay for weeks at a time. The flat will be cat-friendly, so she can take Pebbles too.”

 “It’s just all so sad, so sad. Susan has the world at her feet in terms of fame and money but at this precise moment in time it means nothing. Absolutely nothing. The one thing she wants above all everything else is love. Who doesn’t? Her biggest wish is to find someone who she can share her success with and support her through the difficult times. Of course her family will always be there for her but it is not the same as having someone special in your life.”

Susan is said to be particularly jealous of the family life which her manager Andy Stephens enjoys. Gerry said: “She sees how happy and contented he is with his family and wants that kind of security and love for herself. Susan knows she can jet anywhere in the world first-class, eat in the best restaurants and stay in the top hotels but that means nothing to her if she doesn’t have anyone to share those moments with. All those throw-away comments about Pebbles her cat being her soulmate were a way of masking unhappiness. Susan has this impression that everybody thinks she is some kind of freak because of her appearance on stage and this is what puts men off. Of course her money and fame would intimidate most men and I know the jokes about Susan being nicknamed the ‘Hairy Angel’ hurt her enormously. The harsh reality is that Susan has to control her fame, not the other way around. Maybe if Mr Special came along everything in the garden would be rosy again but as she’s off to Australia I’m not holding my breath.”

In an interview with his “Britain’s Got Talent” ’s co-star Piers Morgan, he says, “In the middle of the live shows – and it was quite public – what happened is that she buckled under the pressure. I brought her into my dressing room on the Friday and basically said to her, ‘You have a choice at this point and if you want to leave the show, you can still walk away, you know, proud for what you’ve achieved. But if this is too much, we’re going to support you on this decision’.”

“But there was absolutely no way she was going to leave this competition and I made it clear to her at that point. She looked me in the eye and said ‘Simon, I want to compete, I want to take part in the competition. I want to prove all the people wrong who doubted me’.”

Boyle finished second in the series final and was subsequently admitted to rehab suffering from exhaustion. She went on to launch a music career, topping the charts in both her native Britain and the U.S.

In an interview on “Piers Morgan’s Life Stories,” Cowell, known for his crude comments to contestants who appear on “American Idol” and “X-Factor” both in the U.S. and in the U.K. said he initially failed to provide a support system for SuBo when she began to struggle with the pressures of fame.

Cowell admitted he only saw stardom for SuBo, who won the hearts of millions of people around the world with her rendition of a “Time to Say Goodbye,” and didn’t think about the impact such fame would have the woman who came from a small village in Scotland.

Said Cowell: “I don’t think that for one second when I saw that (audition) tape that any of us suddenly went ‘What are the repercussions for her.’

“That’s when you suddenly realize, ‘I haven’t thought about this person as a human being.’ And it was a real wake up call I’ve got to tell you.”

Cowell, 50, goes on to say how he is often “appalled” at the things he tells contestants.

“There’s many, many times where I’ve watched a show back and I’m absolutely appalled – you do the show, you’re not aware of what’s happening in the room outside.”

He went on: “You know, somebody just said ‘My dog Lassie died yesterday,’ I’m in a bad mood and, you know, awful, and you see it in that context, it’s very, very difficult to watch.”

Cowell said he often gets caught up in the vibe of the audience and runs with that. “You become part of a mob and when you watch the show back you realize that you’ve gone too far,” he said.
