Susan Boyle, Lady Gaga Help British Music Sales Defy Recession

Despite the recession, sales were down just 0.8% last year, according to the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA). Thanks to beloved SuBo and lady Gaga. Kim Bayley, director general of the ERA, whose members include HMV and Amazon, attributed music’s resilience to the success of big name artists.

“Surging download sales and the huge appeal of SuBo and Gaga show music still has huge appeal for the British public,” she told the BBC.

“It is too soon to call an end to music’s decline, but in 2009 entertainment retailers discovered music has still got a lot to offer.” However, sales of videos and games software fell last year by 10.6% and 11% respectively.

The only resurgence came from the sales of VHS cassettes, which doubled on the year before to 95,201.

SUSAN BOYLE ☆ KILLING ME SOFTLY ☆

Killing Me Softly (High Quality Version) The 48-year-old SuBo’s recorded two songs ten years ago and distributed them to only a handful of her closest friends in the village of Blackburn, West Lothian, where she lives alone with her cat. The recording, which was unearthed by Telegraph.co.uk, features two songs – an early version of the blues ballad Cry Me a River and Killing Me Softly with His Song, the track immortalised by Roberta Flack in 1973. Last week the Daily Record newspaper in Scotland uncovered Miss Boyle’s first CD recording – a version of Cry Me a River recorded for a millenium charity compilation CD at Whitburn Academy. The recording unearthed by Telegraph.co.uk is an earlier demo tape that Ms Boyle had produced to send to record companies, and to local and national TV and radio talent competitions including Michael Barrymore’s My Kind of People, for which she later auditioned but was rejected. The recording was made at her own expense with Miss Boyle telling friends at the time that she had “spent all her savings” on it. It is the earliest example of Miss Boyle’s attempts to gain recognition of her talents as a singer. By the time the tape was made she had already built a reputation among the pubs and clubs of West Lothian. A friend of Ms Boyle, who gave the recording to Telegraph.co.uk, said she had forgotten about the tape until her friend shot to global fame.

Susan Boyle’s U2 Connection

Irish Central has reported that Britain’s Got Talent finalist (and multi-million selling singer) Susan Boyle has as her financial manager Ossie Kilkenny, who formerly managed U2’s finances until the late-90s. As studious U2 fans might recall, Kilkenny’s departure wasn’t exactly a friendly one.

Susan Boyle Reportedly Set To Earn at Least $28 Million This Year

Reports are indicating that Susan Boyle will likely earn at least $28 million this year. She has already received approximately $8 million for the eight and half million worldwide sales of her debut album I Dreamed a Dream. She is expected to earn another $8 million from additional sales and licensing of the album. A second Susan Boyle is planned before Christmas this year. She should earn at least $12 million from the new album. It has not yet been a year since Susan Boyle emerged on the world stage. If her second album is bigger than the last, Susan Boyle’s income will only increase.

I’m going to be worth £16m next year: Susan Boyle

Susan is convinced she will be worth 16 million pounds by next year. After SuBo, 48, released her debut album ‘I Dreamed A Dream’, it became the biggest-selling CD of 2009 in the U.K., and has now sold more than 8.5 million copies globally. The singer, who has reportedly been living off an allowance from Simon Cowell, will receive her first big payout from her worldwide sales when she turns 49 on April 1.

“I’m no April fool – I’m going to be worth 16 million pounds next year,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying. And she is looking forward to buying a new five-bedroom, three-bathroom riverside property in her hometown of Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland.

“Susan was teased from a child because of her birth date and told she would never amount to much in her life. She can still remember the taunts as if they were yesterday,” her brother, Gerry, said.

“But she rang me last week and was so happy. She said, ‘Gerry, if people look at me now they’ll realise I’m no idiot, no fool. I can buy whatever I want.’ I felt so happy for her. She’s had a lot of knocks in life and deserves everything good coming her way… The figures are staggering – eye popping. When Susan was told she dropped the phone and danced a jig around her front room, even though money is not her god and never will be,” he added.
